Unicycling
I like unicycling. That’s riding a ‘bike’ with one wheel.
I’ve been doing it since I learned how to in July 2003. I don’t believe it is beyond anyone - as long as you want to then you can. It takes a number of hours of holding onto things, and falling off (usually onto your feet), but that’s all. I recommend getting a unicycle from unicycle.com.
I got into riding off-road, and then long distance road riding. In September 2007 I broke a Guinness World Record for the furthest distance covered by unicycle in 24 hours - 453.6km.
Other things I have done on unicycles:
- Ridden Land’s End to John o’Groats (in 2005, 1061 miles in 23 days with three friends on bikes)
- Completed the Three Peaks (Ben Nevis, Scafell, Snowdon, in 24 hours - walking up and riding down where possible)
- Raced across Nova Scotia, Canada (a 500 mile team-relay road race called Ride the Lobster, over 5 days. We came 5th out of 34 teams)
- Competed at the 2008 Unicon World Championships in Denmark (42km Marathon: 5th place, 1st ungeared; 10km: 5th; Cross-Country: 5th; 1500m 6th; Off-road Downhill: 9th)
- Entered Mountain Mayhem 24hr offroad bike team event 2005, 2006, 2007.
- Ridden 75 miles from Aberystwyth to Shrewsbury and back the next day to watch Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy in 2005, before it came to Aber.
- Toured Southern Ireland, Skye and from Luxemburg to Leichtenstein.
I have also made a few amature videos of stunts and music…
Wildlife on One
An epic. (Direct download - 11 minutes is too long for YouTube).
Relax, 2005
(ouch, rather overcompressed by YouTube)
Arrival, 2003
My first unicycling months.
